Note(s)21 Aug 1963, Saigon, South Vietnam - Buddhist monks hold signs protesting religious policies of President Ngo Dinh Diem August 18, in memorial services at main Xa Loi Pagoda here. Services were for Buddhists who committed suicide by burning as a demonstration against the government. On August 21, Diem declared martial law throughout South Vietnam and sent troops to the XA Loi Pagoda and otheer temples to round up Buddhist leaders. (U1391306)
