Map collection

The Lyons Institute of East Asian Studies (IAO) has collected a large number of maps of Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City as part of the research project on the history and evolution of the city from its origins to today. The collection includes original maps, photographic or paper reproductions, and slides.

To date, the repository stored approximately six hundred maps and plans. It compiles maps from several particular funds held by the IAO among which:

-         Maps from the Georges Boudarel collection

-         Maps from the Pierre Brocheux collection

-         Maps from the Daniel Hémery collection

-         Maps from the Philippe Langlet collection

-         Maps from private collections

Other online collections of maps are referenced with sources acknowledged as coming from the Vietnam Center and Archive in Texas (Vietnam Archive Map Collection) or from collection websites (Belle Indochine, Manh Hai Gallery) or blogs devoted to the study of the city. Maps and scale drawings produced by Planning Services of Ho Chi Minh City (Planning Information Center of Hochiminh City) are also referenced.

The project plans the systematic digitization of the maps of the city now scattered around the world and to put the collection at the disposal of researchers and students.

Each map has a note on which are indicated, as far as possible, the full title of the map, its current location, date of publishing, and additional information useful for research.

Several old maps have been georeferenced. They are displayed in an interactive mapping app (or WebGIS) presented in the Live Maps tab.

In addition to maps, there’s also aerial imagery in VSgn Collection. Thanks to an agreement with the Service Historique de la Défense (SHD), the French Army Archives Center, IAO has access to the aerial photos taken by the French Air Force in Indochina (1949-1962). The 1951 vertical survey (RV238, covering downtown Saigon) is a example of such an exceptional archive (See the "Saigon, 1951" app.).

This website respects the rights of institutions that own some of the original maps presented here. Requests to reproduce these documents should be addressed directly to the relevant institutions. The online version of our maps does not allow reproduction.
