Biographical information

Henry Graham Greene is a British writer and screenwriter who was born in 1904 and died in 1991. Well-known for his numerous mysterious, philosophic or literary books, he was journalist too.

His existentialism and realism especially come from a complicated childhood which gave him the need to leave his natal country to go through places “far and wild”, as he said himself. In this respect, he travelled in numerous countries, as secret agent for the United Kingdom for part of them, notably in Liberia for his first one at thirty, Mexico, Sierra Leone, Cuba, Haiti or even Indochina and Malaysia too. These experiences were the main bases of his work. From the two last countries he wrote in 1955 a novel entitled The Quiet American. This book describes the town of Saigon during the 1950’s and is quite lucid on the fragility of the colonial power in Viet Nam. It was adapted to cinema two times.

The Queen Elizabeth made him “Companion of Honor” in 1966, before his nomination as member of the “Royal Society of Literature” in 1983 and his decoration with the “Order of Merit” in 1986.
