Biographical information

Carlos Palanca Gutierez est un officier militaire, historien et écrivain espagnol né le 24 mai 1819 à Valence et mort le 16 septembre 1876 à Madrid. Il est principalement connu pour avoir participé à la conquête de la Cochinchine aux cotés des troupes françaises.

En 1858, une expédition conjointe franco-espagnole est ordonnée par Napoléon III et la Reine Isabelle II suite à l'exécution de plusieurs missionnaires catholiques, français et espagnols, sur ordre de l'empereur d'Annam, Tu Duc. 

Carlos Palanca Gutiérrez est alors deuxième chef des forces expéditionnaires espagnoles en Cochinchine et stationne aux Philippines. Par la suite il prend le commandement général des provinces de La Laguna, Tayabas et Batangas puis embarque le 3 septembre en direction de la Cochinchine pour soutenir les forces françaises. En février 1859 il est promu lieutenant-colonel en récompense de son action lors de la prise de Saigón.

Au début de 1860, il est appelé à Madrid ou il reçoit le commandement des forces expéditionnaires ainsi que la charge de ministre plénipotentiaire pour représenter l'Espagne dans les futures négociations de paix avec l'Empire annamite.

Il retourne à Saigon au mois de Mai 1860. Il participe alors à la conquête de la ville de Bien-hóa en décembre 1861, ainsi que de Vinh-Luongen en mars 1861.

Carlos Palanca Gutiérrez participe activement aux négociations menant aux Traité de paix du 5 juin 1862 établissant les annexions françaises et l’ouverture des ports au commerce espagnol. Il en est ainsi l'un des signataires aux cotés de l'amiral français Luis Bonard et de l’Empereur du Vietnam Tu Duc .

Plus tard, il participa à la guerre de dix ans (1868-1878) à Cuba, où il occupa le poste de gouverneur de Santiago de Cuba, puis fut capitaine général des îles Canaries de 1872 à 1873.

Par ordre de l’Empereur Napoléon III, Colonel Carlos Palanca Gutiérrez reçoit la Croix de Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur le 21 mai 1859 , en récompense des services rendus dans l'expédition en Cochinchine.

Enfin Carlos Palanca Gutierez est également connu pour son activité littéraire. Il a notamment rédigé plusieurs poèmes ainsi que des ouvrages militaires parmi lesquels Manual de voces de mando para maniobras de Infantería (Manuel des voix de commande pour des manœuvres d'infanterie, 1854), Reseña histórica de la expedición de Cochinchina (Revue historique de l'expédition en Cochinchine, 1869), Tratado sobre colonias militares (Traité sur les colonies militaires, 1874)

 

 

Carlos Palanca Gutierez is a military officer, historian and Spanish writer born on May 24, 1819 in Valencia and died on September 16, 1876 in Madrid. He is mainly known for having participated in the conquest of Cochin China alongside French troops.

In 1858, a joint Franco-Spanish expedition was ordered by Napoleon III and Queen Isabella II in the aftermath of the execution of several Catholic missionaries, French and Spanish, by order of the emperor of Annam,Tu Duc. 

Carlos Palanca Gutiérrez is then the second leader of the Spanish expeditionary forces in Cochin China and stationed in the Philippines. Subsequently he took the general command of the provinces of La Laguna, Tayabas and Batangas then embarked on September 3 in the direction of Cochin China to support the French forces. In February 1859 he was promoted lieutenant-colonel in recognition of his action during the capture of Saigón.

At the beginning of 1860, he was called to Madrid where he received the command of the expeditionary forces as well as the office of minister plenipotentiary to represent Spain in the future peace negotiations with the Annamese Empire.

He returned to Saigon in May 1860. He then participated in the conquest of the city of Bien-hóa in December 1861, and Vinh-Luongen in March 1861.

Carlos Palanca Gutiérrez takes an active part in the negotiations leading to the Treaty of Peace of 5 June 1862 establishing the French annexations and the opening of ports to Spanish commerce. He is one of the signatories alongside the French admiral Luis Bonard and the Emperor of Vietnam Tu Duc.

Later, he participated in the ten-year war (1868-1878) in Cuba, where he was governor of Santiago de Cuba, then captain general of the Canary Islands from 1872 to 1873.

By order of the Emperor Napoleon III, Colonel Carlos Palanca Gutiérrez received the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor on May 21, 1859, as a reward for services rendered in the Cochinchine expedition.

Finally Carlos Palanca Gutierez is also known for his literary activity. He has written several poems as well as military works among which Manual of Vocations of mando para maniobras de Infantería (Manual of the commanding voices for infantry maneuvers, 1854), Reseña histórica of the expedition of Cochinchina (Historical review of the Expedition in Cochin China, 1869), Tratado sobre colonias militares (Treaty on Military Colonies, 1874)
