Biographical information

Dominique Charles Fouqueray is a French painter and illustrator born in 1869 and died in 1956. Having failed to enter the Navy School, he deferred his interest for marine, travels and colonies in his work. In this respect, he was appointed official painter of the Navy in 1908 and won a lot of prices then, as the Indochina price in 1914 which allowed him to go there.

Because of the first world war, he began to travel. However, he left Europe much later, from 1921, to explore notably the Arabian Peninsula. He used his oriental style to paint Asia too, by illustrating Escales d’Asie and Jonques et Sampans written by Claude Farrère or by working for the hostel of the Annam emperor in Paris. His illustrations which are mainly based both on historical fact and on the thousands of water-colours drawing bought back from his journeys testify these different experiences.

Thanks to his growing reputation, he became the President of the Colonial Society of French artists and created the “Société des beaux-arts de la mer”. He was a jury member of the Colonial Exhibition of 1931 too.
